One of the biggest challenges that comes after gaining or losing weight is what to do with your wardrobe. The clothes you already have don't fit anymore, and certain silhouettes may not look as flattering as they once did. Those who decide to use GLP-1 medication for weight loss may even lose a lot of weight in a short period of time, which can complicate things further. But don't fret — there are many strategies you can use to refresh your style after weight loss. Even celebrities look totally different after using weight-loss medications like Ozempic, and they don't let that ruin their style.

We spoke exclusively with personal stylist and image consultant Cynthia Kennedy about how you can get your wardrobe back up to snuff after GLP-1 weight loss. The first step? Allowing yourself to start over without guilt. "Many women keep clothes that don't fit them anymore 'just in case,' and that really keeps them emotionally attached to a body they've already left behind," Kennedy, who runs Your Style Transformation Academy, tells Glam. "Get rid of those clothes ... A $30 dollar top that fits perfectly will always look better than a $300 one that doesn't."

But, as Kennedy explains, you shouldn't just go out and buy an entire new wardrobe post-weight loss. Instead, invest in "transitional pieces" that can adjust to your changing body. Think wrap dresses, clothing made of fabric that stretches, and adjustable items. Furthermore, it's important to get measured by a professional to ensure that you're picking the best, most comfortable clothing size. "Your proportions shift when your body changes, and what worked before may not be your best option now. Knowing and understanding your current measurements is the basis for dressing well at any size," Kennedy says.

Invest in some classic, high-quality wardrobe staples

While trends come and go, there are certain closet essentials that never go out of style. According to Cynthia Kennedy, re-purchasing some of these timeless pieces is a great way to build the perfect capsule wardrobe after weight loss. "A great fitting pair of wide or straight leg trousers in a neutral color, a crisp white button-down shirt, a blazer that sits on your hip, good quality denim in a medium or dark wash, and a wrap dress. They're incredibly versatile, universally flattering, and never really out of style," Kennedy explains.

But just because an item is a closet staple doesn't mean you can't find a modern version that will be considered stylish right now. Kennedy suggests the Faleave Women's Cotton Linen Summer Palazzo Pants for both trendiness and comfort. Additionally, a traditional poplin shirt can be updated with bright colors — depending on your skin tone, reach for a cobalt blue, tomato red, or lilac shirt over the expected white.

Before you start to revamp your closet after weight loss, it is also important to really consider what you want to look like every day. "Begin with clarity before you buy. Ask yourself: Where do I actually go? How do I want to make people feel when they see me? Clothing that doesn't suit your lifestyle will just collect dust no matter how beautiful it is," Kennedy tells Glam exclusively. Creating a digital guide is a great way to figure out what you want your new look to be without wasting money on clothes you won't wear. Kennedy suggests using Pinterest as a way to save style inspiration pictures, as well as using Net-a-Porter's The Edit and professional stylists on Instagram to find elevated style ideas.

Don't be afraid to incorporate color back into your wardrobe

No matter what your weight is, incorporating color into your wardrobe is always a good idea. If you've lost weight due to a GLP-1, you have the opportunity to completely revamp your look, and you don't have to default to black. " ... color makes you visible in the best possible way, and when you've worked hard to feel good in your body, you deserve to be seen," stylist Cynthia Kennedy affirms.

If colorful dresses or trousers make you nervous, you can always start slowly. Kennedy suggests adding little touches of color into your wardrobe through accessories like bold handbags, such as the CHQEL Evening Clutch Bag and the Newrogeng Acrylic Clutch Purse, or patterned scarves like the Andantino 100% Mulberry Silk Scarf. Another way to slowly add color to your wardrobe is to use fashion's sandwich rule to help you style a perfect look; wear black on the top and bottom of your look, and "sandwich" a bright color in the middle for a bit of contrast.

Besides embracing color and fun patterns, it is also key to ensure that your clothes fit well. After a sudden or considerable weight loss, your initial instinct still may be to purchase clothes that are too big. Make sure you consider how your body proportions have changed before you buy anything; as Kennedy explains to Glam exclusively, having a few of your favorite items altered can completely change your look. But she also stresses that the most important thing about refreshing your look after weight loss is feeling good about yourself. "Confidence doesn't come from wearing a certain size or trend, it comes from feeling comfortable, supported, and like yourself in what you're wearing," Kennedy shares.
