Meghan Markle Outfits That Didn't Deserve The Hate
Meghan Markle is, unfortunately, intimately familiar with fashion criticism. We hate to say it, but some of it has been deserved. For starters, we'll never forget Meghan Markle's most inappropriate outfits because, well, there have been many of them over the years. She sometimes wears things that lack a little polish, which isn't the worst offense, but should be remedied considering her caliber. But, equally, she has also gotten it right many times – Meghan Markle had many iconic Princess Diana-inspired looks that we've adored over the years.
And on that note, we also believe that some of her outfits that have come under fire in the past didn't really deserve the heat. During her tenure as an official working royal, it seemed Markle often couldn't win with the British press — no matter what she wore, many outlets and internet critics had something negative to say about it. Although there were some who considered a handful of her fashion choices uncouth, many of her outfits would actually be considered conservative and sophisticated by us common folk. One example that comes to mind was when Meghan Markle's 2018 Trooping the Colour Outfit was labeled inappropriate by royal standards. Shots were fired at this outfit and many more, but Markle took it in stride.
Meghan Markle's ripped skinny jeans didn't meet royal standards
The 2017 Invictus Games caused a stir for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. It was the first time the couple was photographed together publicly, and outlets like Page Six detailed scrutiny over Markle for wearing a pair of ripped skinny jeans. While this is a perfectly normal outfit for the average person, Markle was under a microscope due to her royal association. The royal family's dress code is pretty strict, but she wasn't an official royal yet and shouldn't have gotten so much hate for this outfit.
Meghan Markle's black V-neck dress was labeled inappropriate
In 2018, Meghan Markle wore a sleek black midi dress to a women's empowerment event and many U.K. tabloids, such as OK!, claimed that she broke royal protocol by wearing such a dress. The outlet further went on to say that royals generally frown upon wearing black to public appearances unless they're attending a funeral. In addition to this rule seeming outdated, Markle's dress was sleek, elegant, and not in any way revealing — perfectly appropriate for the occasion.
Meghan Markle's black tuxedo dress was seen as too short
A tuxedo dress would feel like a classy outfit option for most, but for Meghan Markle, it turned out to be one of her most unnecessarily criticized outfits to date. Markle wore this outfit to a charity performance of "Hamilton" in 2018, and the Daily Mail deemed this outfit on the "risqué" side by royal standards because it fell above the knee. While this dress does fall a bit above the knee, it's not so short that it's inappropriate in any way.
Meghan Markle's dark dress at a wedding caused a stir
While attending a wedding in 2018, Meghan Markle received outfit backlash for several reasons. According to People, many criticized her for, once again, wearing black to the wrong occasion. But, many also claimed that she had a "wardrobe malfunction" when her lace camisole peeked out through her button-down blouse. While this was considered revealing by royal standards, this top combination is not uncommon in the U.S., and Markle may have been struggling to find her royal footing at the time. The outfit looked classy otherwise, with a knee-length skirt and fascinator.
Internet trolls criticized Meghan Markle's off-the-shoulder dress
And then, there was Meghan Markle's infamous off-the-shoulder dress that, according to Page Six, received a slew of online hate when she wore it to her first Trooping the Colour ceremony in 2018. Many deemed this look inappropriate for the occasion because it exposed so much of her shoulders. While it was less buttoned-up than what her fellow royal Kate Middleton wore at the time, the blush color of this two-piece look is gorgeous and the silhouette timeless and elegant — not at all too revealing or vulgar.
Some said Meghan Markle's wedding dress was ill-fitting
Sadly, even Meghan Markle's Givenchy wedding gown came under fire in 2018. Katy Perry (who really had no business commenting in the first place) told Entertainment Tonight that she "would have done one more fitting." She also went on to mention that Kate Middleton "won" the wedding dress battle between the two. But, this is another instance where Markle didn't deserve the criticism. While the dress was certainly on the conservative and simple side, it didn't look ill-fitting in any way. In fact, it seemed to match her proportions quite well.
