The Best-Dressed Women Over 40 At The 2026 Met Gala

The wait is finally over and the biggest fashion event of the year is here. The annual Met Gala is held to raise money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, and it seems as though the legendary institution served as inspiration for this year's theme: "Costume Art," which seamlessly ties in with the dress code, "Fashion Is Art." While this theme is not as niche as ones from the past, many attendees did not disappoint when it came to wearing works of artistry. This was especially true when it came to the established A-listers who possess decades of fashion knowledge and experience, many of whom are older than 40. 

The Met Gala is proof that age is just a number as its regular and most highly anticipated attendees come from all generations. Veterans of the Met Gala are not considered old, but instead have wisdom and prestige that is highly regarded. In 2025, all eyes were on 81-year-old Diana Ross who dominated the event in a crystal gown and 18-foot train. Of the many celebrities that walked the 2026 Met Gala red carpet, it was the ladies over 40, like Naomi Watts, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour herself, who hit all the right style notes perfectly. 

Naomi Watts was a vision on the 2026 Met Gala red carpet. She wore a strapless black Dior gown with a bustle skirt that included eye-catching flower details along the sides for pretty pops of color. The florals were also used to decorate Watts' hair, making her look like the subject of a painting. Elements of the look felt like an homage to traditional Spanish black wedding dresses, while the floral headwear and silhouette evoked the costumes worn for flamenco dancing. These details kept Watts from looking too simple and instead, stunning. 

This sultry, body-hugging dress made it crystal clear that Nicole Kidman is in her Princess Diana "single era." Her 2026 Met Gala outfit was fiery and fierce while still maintaining a level of elegance. Kidman's cranberry-colored Chanel long-sleeved gown had a slight train, and boa feathers around her waist and wrists that seemingly paid tribute to her role in 2001's "Moulin Rouge!" If Kidman is looking to attract a new mate, her sparkling and sexy use of the color crimson should definitely do the trick!  

A co-chair of this year's Met Gala, athlete Venus Williams looked beautiful in a Swarovski dress that fit her like a glove. Her body-hugging black gown had a subtle shine and was accented by a silver necklace that cascaded over Williams' chest. The neckpiece included thin diamond chains that flowed down her shoulders and bodice to add dimension. This was a great example of how to style a statement necklace to make it the focus of the outfit. Williams' hair was up in a high bun, providing balance against the mermaid-style silhouette and train. 

With "The Devil Wears Prada 2" premiering, Anne Hathaway has been having an ongoing fashion moment, and her attendance at the 2026 Met Gala continued her run of impressive outfits. Hathaway gave off princess vibes with her Michael Kors ballgown and gorgeous necklace. The fabric of her black dress included the hand-painted image of a white dove and white botanical patterns along the borders. The circular plunging neckline looked incredibly graceful. It's as if Hathaway's body was used as a canvas to create a piece that delivered on the theme — hang this dress in a gallery! 

It's unbelievable that Angela Bassett is 67 years old since she wears dresses so effortlessly. Her 2026 Met Gala outfit was super fun and flirty, yet tasteful in a way that didn't make Bassett look childish. Make no mistake: This was a dress for a grown woman. The pink Prabal Gurung gown was cut off asymmetrically at the waist by a row of flower petals. Then a single strap of florals was attached to the sweetheart neckline and wrapped over Bassett's shoulder. The skirt, complete with leg slit, included lines of pink beads over the sheer fabric that Bassett matched with pink platform heels.   

It wouldn't be the Met Gala without Anna Wintour wearing an unforgettable outfit! This year, Vogue's global editorial director wore an oceanic teal Chanel ensemble that included black trim for a hint of drama. Her sheath dress featured a pattern that mimicked the appearance of artistic mosaic tile, shining in the light and pierced in the shape of cut glass. Her trendy overcoat was in the form of lovely minty-green plumage, similar to the one Taylor Swift wore in her music video for "The Fate of Ophelia."  

Olympian Lindsey Vonn has a history of wearing spicy outfits that show off her body. But for the 2026 Met Gala, Vonn embraced a refined sense of style by sporting a floor-length Thom Browne dress. Her one-shoulder mermaid gown was made of a sheer fabric that looked similar to marble stone with its dark veining throughout. The skirt of white tulle and matching glove that covered Vonn's forearm felt playful yet proper. Her blond curls fell beautifully along her shoulder and back, making the entire ensemble look angelic on Vonn.  

At 40 years old, Janelle Monáe is a master when it comes to wearing memorable pieces. Her Christian Siriano outfit was the best embodiment of the night's theme as the textured moss and the silver facets were reminiscent of Renaissance pieces of artwork. The shape of the garment flowed perfectly over her body to create the illusion of ongoing curves. She was wise to be minimal with her hair and makeup so the clothing creation could really shine. The whimsical outfit was perfectly accented with a butterfly headpiece which felt youthful and a touch bohemian.
