Jennifer Hudson has established herself as a powerhouse vocalist and irresistible personality in the 20 years of her illustrious career. First introduced to the world as an up-and-coming singer on "American Idol," Hudson soon conquered the world of acting by winning an Oscar for her breakout role in the 2006 movie musical "Dreamgirls." She has since become a mainstay on television as the host of "The Jennifer Hudson Show," and her updated wardrobe — not to mention the changes to her hair and makeup — have made her look nearly unrecognizable from her first TV appearance.

Hudson made her Hollywood debut when she auditioned for the third season of "American Idol" in late 2003. She was only 22 years old at the time and casually styled a little black dress with dangly earrings and lip gloss for her initial try-out. Throughout the season, Hudson's signature style came to be defined through layered looks that included blazers over tank tops and baby tees — much like the pinstriped blazer she wore with a white tee, chain belt, and dark-wash jeans while performing during a live show taping in 2004. Her hair reached shoulder length and consisted of free-flowing tight curls.

The "Think Like a Man" singer returned to "American Idol" in 2026 as a guest judge and proved that she has developed impeccable taste in formalwear, plus elevated her beauty game, in the years since her debut. While she still doesn't show obvious signs of aging in her face, her off-the-shoulder black dress brought about a refined, mature energy as it hugged her curves. She completed the outfit by sporting short wavy auburn hair, dark cherry lip gloss, and a gold statement necklace.

Jennifer Hudson has been through quite a transformation since American Idol

Jennifer Hudson has come a long way since her earliest days on "American Idol," the most evident shifts being in both her body and her wardrobe. Hudson initially searched for a solution to lose weight after welcoming her son in 2009. She lost 80 pounds while on the Weight Watchers program in 2011, and spent the next few years as a spokeswoman for the company. The singer was able to shed pounds by becoming more active, going to the gym, and altering her diet. Similar to how fellow "American Idol" contestant Kelly Clarkson has spoken about her weight loss, Hudson detailed her experience in her 2012 memoir "I Got This: How I Changed My Ways and Lost What Weighed Me Down," noting that her weight-loss journey helped her to boost her confidence as she approached her 30s.

No matter what size she is, Hudson has always loved fashion, even designing the memorable strapless pink dress that she wore on "American Idol" in 2004. She still maintains her enthusiasm for clothes by taking elements of her "Idol" wardrobe and maturing them into statement-making outfits fit for a grown woman. For example, she still wears strapless sweetheart-style dresses but now experiments with details like mesh panels and beading.

On her talk show in particular, Hudson has perfected the art of balancing elegant and preppy ensembles that show off her curves. She embraces maximalism on red carpets by wearing gorgeous gowns that highlight her shape and are often covered in opulent shimmer. While she has always been intentional with her wardrobe choices, her increasing confidence over the years — partially as a result of her changing figure — has led to more exciting fashion choices that have come a long way from her "American Idol" beginnings.
