This Memorable Celeb Outfit Was Mocked For Years But Now Everybody's Copying It

The Canadian tuxedo was considered a fashion faux pas for a long time. Wearing denim on denim used to be a style crime of the highest order, but now, the look has been refined into a stylish option for those who want to go for a not-so-typical monochromatic set. Britney Spears famously donned an all-denim outfit in 2001 that didn't go over well at the time. For her appearance at the 28th American Music Awards, the "Toxic" singer wore a denim gown alongside her then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake, who was wearing a matching denim suit and cowboy hat. While we look at Spears' outfit much differently today, it it didn't get a lot of love when she first wore it.

Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake's unforgettable Canadian tuxedo moment became instantly iconic. Though critics mocked the matching outfits, the young couple's denim prom-style outfits (as Timberlake's suit designer Steven Gerstein referred to them) made their mark on fashion history. Now part of pop culture iconography, Spears and Timberlake's all-denim style has become a popular couple's Halloween costume, and Katy Perry and Riff Raff paid tribute to the style with their own versions at the 2014 Video Music Awards.

However, the style has transcended Spears and Timberlake's campy, very Y2K interpretation, and in recent years, double denim is trending, and there are many ways to elevate the Canadian tuxedo look. Several celebrities, including Oprah, Bella Hadid, Jennifer Lawrence, and Dua Lipa have worn full-denim outfits in both casual and upscale ways, proving that the humble Canadian tuxedo can be chic.

Many celebrities have modernized the Canadian tuxedo trend

Double denim is definitely back, and many stars are getting in on the trend. Though supermodel Bella Hadid has worn some outdated outfits, she typically has a finger on the pulse of what's new. During Milan Fashion Week in February 2026, Hadid made headlines with a perfectly-tailored Canadian tuxedo. Hadid donned a pair of flared jeans and a matching zip-up jacket, which she wore over a white turtleneck sweater. Unlike Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake's double-denim ensembles, Hadid's look was effortlessly chic. That's not too surprising, however, as the outfit came from Hadid's collaboration with Italian fashion brand Miss Sixty.

Hadid's interpretation of the Canadian tuxedo takes a modern approach to '70s menswear, but Dua Lipa went full-tilt into the 2020s with her version of the double-denim trend. The singer wore an all-denim bustier bra top, baggy pantaboots, and handbag during an outing in New York City in 2022. Lipa's take on double (or triple, in her case) denim was a stylish way to turn the Canadian tuxedo into a trendy streetwear look. While double denim may not have the most illustrious reputation, there are plenty of ways to make it stylish.
