Mother-Daughter Duos In Hollywood With Matching Tattoos

When it comes to getting matching tattoos with someone, it's something you need to think long and hard about before rushing in to the closest tattoo studio. For starters, you want to choose a non-cringy matching tattoo, because although the tattoos can be removed, the removal process is far more painful than the tattoo was in the first place. Secondly, you want to make darn sure that the person you're getting the tattoo with is planning on being in your life for the long-haul. Because of that, when it comes to matching tattoos, it's best to do it with the someone you know isn't likely to go anywhere — no matter how much you might bicker over the most absurd things. Enter: mom.

According to a 2023 Pew Research Center survey, 32% of U.S. adults have a tattoo and 22% have more than one. In other words, tattoos are more common than ever, but it may still take a bit of convincing, especially if your mother is from a generation where tattoos were something only bikers and people living on the fringes of society would get. These days, it can be a meaningful way to celebrate a special occasion or milestone, or simply honor the bond you share.

When Brooke Shields' daughter Rowan graduated from high school, the two decided to celebrate with matching ladybug tattoos. Although the tattoos were Rowan's idea, Shields, who'd previously wanted her kids to wait until they were 30 for their first tattoo, was excited to get inked with her daughter. "When [Rowan] was born, she just looked like two [big] eyes," Shields told People in June 2021. "She just looked like a little bug and that's been her nickname ever since." While Shields got her ladybug on the inside of her wrist, Rowan opted for the outside of her ankle.

In anticipation of her 50th birthday, Tiffani Thiessen and her mom Robyn Thiessen got matching butterfly tattoos on their hands. In a January 2024 Instagram post, Thiessen explained the reason behind the decision to get butterflies. "I have always had a beautiful bond with my grandmother and she loved butterflies," Thiessen wrote. "My mom and I both dedicated these tattoos to her." As Thiessen shared, her grandmother believed butterflies symbolize transformation and rebirth, and after she passed away, Thiessen and her mom could count on her to be there in butterfly form. In 2021, not only did Jada Pinkett Smith getting matching tattoos with her daughter Willow Smith, but they also got Pinkett Smith's mom, Adrienne Banfield-Norris, in on the action, too. During an episode of "Red Table Talk," the trio decided to get lotus tattoos by tattoo artist Dr. Woo. "The lotus represents spiritual enlightenment," Willow explained in a clip that Pinkett Smith shared on Instagram. "And we hear the saying, 'Through the mud grows the lotus' ... I think all of us, from different perspectives in life have had that journey."

When you have two daughters, as Brooke Shields does, you simply can't get matching tattoos with only one of them. Because of that, in May 2024, Shields got matching tattoos with her daughter Grier. Although the tattoo Shields got with Rowan was a ladybug, to honor her nickname for Rowan since she was a baby, with Grier, both women got a pair of heels facing each other. In one pair, the feet are fully grown, while in the other pair, the feet are small, representing a child playing grown up in their mother's heels.

While Courteney Cox and her daughter Coco have their own matching tattoos that say, "Lead with the truth," they also have tattoos that match with Laura Dern and her kids, Jaya and Ellery. In January 2023, Cox shared a photo on Instagram of herself, Coco, Dern, and Dern's kids, all sporting new ink that reads "go long" with a paper plane. "Adding a new layer to our 16 year Christmas Eve tradition," Cox wrote in the caption of the photo. "Watch out... we might have sleeves by 2025." 

When it comes to Angelina Jolie's stunning style transformation, it's impossible to ignore her tattoos. Because Jolie has such an affinity for ink, it comes as no surprise that she'd get matching tattoos with at least one of her kids. In September 2024, Jolie told CR Fashion Book that she and her daughter Vivienne share a tattoo that reads, "Stay Gold," honoring their time together working on the Broadway musical "The Outsiders." In the same interview, Jolie said she also shares a bird tattoo with some of her children, however, she didn't get into details.

If you needed another adorable moment between Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson to gush over, then we have one for you: matching tattoos ... sort of. "We have the same size foot. We have the same-looking foot. Like, it's literally identical, which is so cute," Hudson said on "The Martha Stewart Podcast" in March 2025 about her and Hawn's feet. "For her 60th birthday, she got a heart [tattoo] right where my star is on her foot, so when we put our feet together they look exactly the same." A self-described "wimp," the star is Hudson's only tattoo.

In July 2023, Carrie Underwood got matching tattoos with not just her mom Carole, but her two sisters, Shanna and Stephanie, too. "When your 74-year-old mother asks you and your sisters to get matching tattoos with her in Vegas, the only questions are, 'what?' and 'where?' I never would've thought I'd see the day that Mama Carole would be gettin' some ink," Underwood captioned the carousel of Instagram photos. While Underwood's mom and sisters got their heart tattoos on their wrists, Carrie decided to get hers on the top of her foot.

Like Tiffani Thiessen, Judy Greer also thought that matching ink was a cool way to celebrate turning 50. However, she didn't just get one with her step-daughter, Emilee, but had the whole family get one for her big 5-0. "We got record players," Greer told People in September 2025, adding that she wanted something gender-neutral that the whole family could appreciate. "I wanted to find something that was meaningful as a family, that was not a word, and that we would all like to have on our bodies forever," said Greer. And who doesn't love music?
