Laurie Metcalf's 2026 Tony Awards Dress Stunned But Her Gray Hair Transformation Stole The Show
Laurie Metcalf may have turned heads at the 2026 Tony Awards for her floor-length multicolor gown, but we're obsessed with her gray pixie cut. Metcalf took home her third Tony award, this time for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her performance in the "Death of a Salesman" revival. The actor attended the ceremony in a form-fitting gown covered in yellow, black, purple, and orange sequins. Metcalf swept her cool-toned gray hair back, keeping its styling simple as to allow the sparkling dress to shine.
Like many of the other celebrities who proudly show off their gray hair, Metcalf wears her hair in a stylish pixie cut, which can be a complete game-changer for women over 60. The actor may have debuted her new hairstyle in May 2026 at the Tony Awards' "Meet The Nominees" event, but, a few years ago, she experimented with her look by allowing her gray roots to peek through. While filming "Roseanne" sequel series "The Conners" in 2020, Metcalf styled her hair in a light brown bixie (pixie and bob) cut — she decided to keep her gray hair when she returned to set in the midst of Covid-19 in order to reflect the state of the world.
Laurie Metcalf let her roots go gray while filming The Conners in 2020
While "Roseanne" star Laurie Metcalf debuted fully silver hair a few weeks ahead of the 2026 Tony Awards, she experimented with the color back in 2020. Metcalf allowed her gray roots to show while filming "The Conners" amid strict Covid-19 production regulations. "As soon as I heard we were going back and I hadn't, of course, done anything to my hair, I thought, oh, this is going to be perfect," Metcalf told ABC7's On The Red Carpet. "I'll let the roots grow out. I'll do my own hair and makeup, and I'll look like hell like we all do and are supposed to right now."
Metcalf went back to brown in her real life for a few years afterwards, but has now fully embraced going gray; she made the decision to cut off the last pieces of her brown hair and dye the rest to match in May 2026. The Tony Award-winning actor enlisted the services of celebrity hairstylist David Benjamin for the major transformation. Benjamin, who has worked with celebs like Jeremy Strong and Rachel McAdams, explained on Instagram that, in addition to cutting Metcalf's hair into its chic pixie, he also used a mix of white and gray color to create her fantastic new look.
