Candice Bergen's Daughter Chloe Malle Was Destined To Forge A Career In Fashion

When Chloe Malle succeeded Anna Wintour to become the Head of Editorial Content for Vogue in September 2025, the status quo of the fashion and media worlds was forever changed. After nearly 40 years as Vogue's editor-in-chief, Wintour stepped down to fill a higher role overseeing not only the publication's global content, but that of all Condé Nast's other outlets as well. Malle started off at Vogue in 2011 as a social editor, advancing over the years to become the website's main editor prior to her massive 2025 promotion. However, Malle's hiring sparked nepotism debates online, as her mother is actor and model Candice Bergen.

Malle's career trajectory certainly makes sense when you look at her mother's path. Bergen, who won five Emmy awards for her performance on the '90s newsroom sitcom "Murphy Brown," modeled for Vogue herself prior to her finding success in the acting world. In addition to other editorial shoots that appeared in the magazine, Bergen was featured on the cover of Vogue's special issue in May 1967.

Bergen looked amazing on the cover, for which she was dressed in a bright yellow short-sleeved top and statement earrings. The "Murphy Brown" star wore her hair in voluminous, shoulder-grazing waves: the ultimate '60s bombshell blowout. Who would could have guessed that, nearly 60 years later, her daughter would be the person deciding what Vogue's covers would look like? On an episode of the podcast "The Run-Through with Vogue," Bergen told Malle that modeling was only "interesting" to her for the first few shoots. "I remember modeling when I was 15 or 16," Bergen said. "I started to earn my own money and putting on what seemed like grownup clothes, women's suits and stockings and thinking, 'Ooh, what a lot of trouble.'"

Chloe Malle made her controversial Met Gala debut in May 2026

One of the most important yearly undertakings for Vogue is the Met Gala, which the publication has played a large role in organizing since Anna Wintour became the chair of the fundraising event in 1999. Wintour has transformed the humble museum fundraiser into a massive (ultra-exclusive) cultural event; she even writes the many rules that Met Gala attendees must follow. Naturally, as Vogue's new Head of Editorial Content, Chloe Malle was expected to make a large impact on the event. Malle, whose mother, Candice Bergen, ironically portrayed fictional Vogue editor-in-chief Enid Frick on "Sex and the City" and "And Just Like That," made a splash at her first Met Gala (though not really for the reasons she'd hoped).

While Malle wasn't one of the best-dressed women at the 2026 Met Gala, she still looked gorgeous in an elegant mustard-yellow gown designed by Colleen Allen. Malle did receive a fair amount of criticism for her look, which many online thought was lackluster for the notoriously over-the-top Met Gala. While it wasn't exactly the best start for Malle's tenure as Head of Editorial Content, we're confident that the journalist will hit her stride. After all, with a mother as fabulous as Bergen and over a decade at Vogue under her belt, Malle has a well-honed eye for style.
